Sarasota Orchestra Presents: Mozart and More

Sunday, September 22, 2019, 11:00 PM

Five is the magic number in this program featuring works for various quintets. Italian composer Alfredo Casella composed his Serenata in 1927, the same year he took over as Music Director of the Boston Pops Orchestra. This delightful work is one of only a few chamber music works to combine the trumpet with string and wind instruments. Stephen Gryc’s Fantasy Variations on a Theme of Béla Bartók is an evocative showpiece for the oboe. Finally, Mozart is known to have been especially fond of the viola, perhaps because he himself played it. He wrote no less than four works for string quartet with an “extra” viola. His String Quintet No. 2 in C Major takes full advantage of the rich sonorities that are possible when the middle of the string section is doubled. The Quintet’s bubbling and humorous finale will bring this five star program to a joyful close.
