Laurence Siegel
This two-session presentation explores the origins and evolution of contemporary dance. We’ll begin with its birth in the cauldron of change and turmoil of the early 20th century. Using archival film and articles, we’ll watch and discuss the early innovators such as Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham and the controversies that surrounded the launch of the form. Moving through the century we’ll view works of choreographers from established international companies such as Parsons Dance, Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot and Campagnie Marie Chouinard. We’ll investigate the work of companies and choreographers of diverse cultural backgrounds including Novadance who have synthesized traditional and contemporary modes to create  uniquely innovative dance repertoires. And finally, we’ll look at the recent interface of dance with film to produce a new form known as screen dance. This promises to be a revealing and moving experience.

Cost: $40 – $45
